Smashing Machine, The: The Life and Times of Mark Kerr
Directed by
John Hyams
A sport so dangerous it was once banned in the U.S., no-holds-barred fighting is undeniably the purest form of human competition. Simple in concept and savage in execution, it is the definitive test of survival: one ring, two fighters, and no rules. In this exciting, graphic documentary, the camera takes an unflinching look at the world of extreme fighting through the eyes of the sport's top fighters, including Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr, a modern-day gladiator who became an overnight sensation when he claimed championships in Brazil, Japan, and The United States.
The number one ranked fighter in the world, Mark Kerr's success has brought him money, international fame, and a full-blown addiction to painkillers. As he navigates his way through a never-ending struggle with drugs and dysfunction, he attempts to remain on top of a sport that is growing and evolving at a furious rate. Along the way, Kerr comes up against Mark "The Hammer" Coleman, his mentor and former UFC Champion, and inventor of his own brutal style of fighting known as the "ground and pound." Once the most feared man in the world of no-holds-barred fighting, Coleman is determined to make a comeback and regain what was once his, even if he has to go through his friend and former protégé to do so.

A superb documentary. Both shocking and gripping at the same time. I'm a big fan of UFC/Pride etc, but this film has left me wondering how far performance-enhancing drugs have infiltrated into the sport of MMA today?

Love the sport. Like Kerr. Like the documentary. I like that HBO exposed Kerr. I wish HBO could make a documentary about true heroes. Not those addicted to opiates. Why not do a show about steroids? I wish athletes would be great models for the public; but, just like baseball, they are only interested in the false claim of glory from drugs.

This is probably my all-time favorite documentary of all time. After the initial shock of the real-life violence, I was mezmorized for the entire 90-minutes. I had never watched mixed martial arts competition until I saw this documentary, and now I am a full-blown fan. A real eye-opening must-see for people of all ages and backgrounds.

A very well-done documentary. If you don't know why they call him the Smashing Machine, you will after watching this film. The ups and downs of his life are pretty startling. Mark Coleman is an added bonus and his career and life tie in nicely with the overall story. Opens your eyes to ultimate fighting and teaches you some life lessons as well. However, did anyone else feel bad for Mark Coleman?? Even though he had just won $200,000 and was sitting all alone in his "dressing room" with the belt, you feel a bit of sadness for some reason. Maybe it's because he's a champion with the belt, who's not the youngest anymore and will eventually have to "hang it up"... 9 out of 10!!

I agree that this documentary is amazing and it show the struggles of a man in one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. If you havent seen it, you really should.

I was blown away at how powerful of a fighter he is. I didn't actually think I would see him get taken down. Mark Kerr is definately the Smashing Machine and after watching the documentary of his life I am more interested in watching UFW.

I have seen this story and it is one that any sports fan that love true sports would want to watch and read about. When it calls Mark Kerr a smashing machine, thats an understatement. This is a dynamic fighter all the best.

This guy is a true machine... A fighter and a lover. It was truly amazing to watch this film. It grabbed me to the point of not blinking. Since watching this film I have a whole new respect for the art and science of professional wrestling. Incredible.

A raw account of Mixed Martial Arts and a fighter who does battle in the ring and against himself. One of the best sports documentaries ever made. Worth every dollar.
